Why do I need an Oil Change

Why Do I Need an Oil Change?

One of the most common bits of maintenance that every car with an internal combustion engine needs- is an oil change. Synthetic oils are more advanced than ever, and the time between oil changes has been greatly extended. Nonetheless, we can’t do without engine oil completely. That’s why in today’s blog we’re offering a helping hand to explain just why it is you need to change your car’s oil, in Madison, WI.

What Does Engine Oil Do?

Engine Oil is often described as the “lifeblood” of your car’s engine. This is no exaggeration. Its main function is to provide lubrication to the many moving parts that make up your engine. It circulates the engine, lubricating and helping to keep everything cool and balanced.

If you were to put a fresh batch of engine oil into your car, but then leave it continuously unchanged, then many bad things would start to happen. One of the things that your oil does is pick up bits of dirt, grit and other impurities and gets them out of the engine system via the oil filters. This keeps the engine clean and operating smoothly.

What Happens if You Don’t Change Your Oil?

Over time, your engine oil starts to thicken as it collects contaminants and the filters reach their capacity. Unable to continue filtering out the bad material, it stays in the oil, leaving it discolored, grainy and increasingly less able to do its main job as a lubricant.

As time wears on and the oils lubricating quality diminishes, the engine will start to experience greater wear and tear. The engine parts keep trying to move at the same high speeds that they need to but the lack of functioning engine oil means heat is not being absorbed as it should, and the parts are starting to struggle.

Friction and heat grow, with the inevitable result being dangerous overheating and even catastrophic engine failure. You might think that by pushing your oil further and further you are making great saving. Believe us when we tell you that the cost of an oil change is nothing compared to the bill you will be facing if you have to put in a new engine.

How Often Do I Need an Oil Change?

The answer to this depends on the age of your car and what kind of oil you are typically using. This can depend on driving behavior, though.  Here at Aeschbach Automotive, in Middleton, WI we will recommend somewhere between 3,000-7,500 miles in between your oil changes.

Pull out the dipstick and check the consistency of the oil there. If it’s smooth and glossy, then it’s ok, and your problems might be being caused by something else. If it appears grainy, discolored or too viscous, then you could be due for a change.  As always you’re welcome to stop by and one of our advisors or technicians would be happy to check the oil level for you.

Never Miss an Oil Change

Skipping an oil change is a false economy and makes your car less safe to drive. Change the oil at the appropriate times, and ask your advisor at Aeschbach Automotive in Middleton, WI if you are unsure about anything to do with the state of your engine oil.
